Standardizing Flow Cytometry for AI Applications in Regenerative Medicine: The NIST Consortium Approach

Recent advances in regenerative medicine advanced therapies (RMAT) are revolutionizing health care. Flow cytometry assays are used to measure critical quality attributes for RMATs. However, comparing, reproducing, and standardizing results across various flow cytometer platforms, sites, and times remains a major challenge. Furthermore, the unavailability of high-quality datasets across instrument platforms limits the potential development of artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) approaches to flow cytometry applications. In December 2020, the NIST launched the Flow Cytometry Standards Consortium (FCSC), which aims to standardize data across instruments and assays, as well as develop AI-enhanced workflows for cytometric applications.
